Perhaps more than a gut check, what is needed is to look upon Christ and his righteousness and rest in that. Because even if a person tried his best, this is not good enough. Moreover, how does a person know if he or she tried his best anyway? What has helped me is not to look at my performance all that much, but to look to Christ. When I find my rest in him, paradoxically, I perform better. I think the logic is that when I am rested, I performs my best. I think this is what God's grace does. It enables a person not to take himself too seriously, because that person realizes that God's grace and love is overwhelming. When this happens, there is such freedom from self, performance, legalism, etc. May God bless you. Thanks for the post.
